Sakizou- The Star

You may have noticed many cosplayers who have cosplayed this amazing artist’s creations. Sakizou is an artist known for rococo characters with trim upon trim and it’s a seamstress’s playground. I debated which one I wanted to tackle for a long time but I was drawn to the Star due to her vibrant colors and surprisingly I had never made a corset before, so I thought it would be a GREAT idea to start with a full cupped corset bodysuit (newsflash it wasn’t it was hard!)

For this build I actually started with the tights because the corset scared me, and I had to wait a long time to gather all the materials needed. I frankensteined a couple pairs together- 3 total actually. One nude pair of fishnets, one aqua teal and one purple pair. I added some of the corset coutil on the knees and hand beaded gold vinyl and sewed it onto the knees. I added lots of sparkle, flowers and vines. i used the remains of the tights to make the arm sleeves as well, and added embellishments to those as well. I also bought some shoes from a thrift shop to paint and cover in trim. I used cabochons I got online for the little gem on the shoes.

Working on the tights

Next there was no way around it I needed to start on the corset. I used a pattern I got on etsy and spent a very long time marking the fabric and cutting it then pinning it to make changes before I actually sewed it together and added the boning. I love how it turned out for my first corset. the cups were probably the part I liked the least but that was nothing a little bit of sequins and glitter couldn’t hide.

First try on of the corset

Sakizou looks are known for being absolutely covered in trim, ribbon, and beading so I knew I had to deck out the corset. I started by adding the purple sections and overlaid tons of fun trims and things until it looked like the reference photos I had

The finished corset

Next I made the Shakespearian Ruff by using the wire ribbon method and hand stitching. It velcros together in the back so i can take it off easily. I felt ready to break out into Hamlet when it was done

Next was the skirt and bolero. I used a gorgeous Silk-Shantung and this was my first time doing ruffles with a ruffle foot. I had to do some trial and error but I ended up with a pretty good result! I made many different widths of ribbon so the cabbage skirt would have dimension. I used spiral ruffles for the little jellyfish tendrils. The way the skirt is worn is a little weird, it goes over the corset in the back but under the skirt in the front so I had to make a little sleeve for the back to go through so it wouldn’t be squished. I made a bow and added a feather to the front and the bolero was completed!

The final piece of this costume was the wig. I got really lucky and grabbed a wig from Arda wigs on discount that was being discontinued. I’m glad because I really needed a purple lacefront and this seemed to be the only one I could find. I added some wefts to the back to make it a ponytail wig. After styling, I made some EVA earrings and little crown piece then adorned the wig with stars and beads. I made a quick star out of foam to glue to my forehead and thus the outfit was done! I have yet to compete with this costume but I look forward to doing it! I have yet to wear this to a convention as well so hopefully soon I can get some new updated photos.
